Oswald - Mapping
After numerous failed attempts at level design over the course of three years, I have finally completed a layout. Well, sorta. Seeing as we [SID] are pooling our resources on some of the current levels, we have decided to update many of the older levels, Docks, Swim, Riyadh and Streets to name a few.

I have the task of work on ut_streets from NRGizeR. It started out as a simple retexturing job, but after getting into the .map file in GtkRadiant, the map was a complete nightmare. I decided to rebuild the entire level from the ground up.

I have a nearly duplicate layout as the original. Currently, there is a bit more coverage on the building under construction, also added a first floor to the building next to the candy store and a room and two hallways in the corner building across the street from Jed's Gun Shop.

Texturing is slow and tedious, I do not know how people like Blade and nutZ can do it so damn well and remain sane! I'm going crazy with this shit! I have the computer building done and the candy store. I did give out a teaser in IRC one day, but the level is really not ready to be displayed. Soon...soon.

GeekWearZ & Urban Terror
w00t...the partnership is finally official and designs have been submitted for a line of merchandise, thanks to Tommy and Andrew over at GeekWearZ. We are pleased to announce that GeeKWearZ.com has reached an agreement with Silicon Ice to manufacture product for the game Urban Terror. Unfortunatly, the product will not be available immediately, as we are still developing the many different products (hats, shirts, jackets, beer mugs and stickers) that you will be able to purchase.

We are quite excited, as I am sure most in the community are about this venture. We give the community something they have been asking for (thanks to GW) and the community gets to wear some damn cool shirts (designs courtesy of SweetnutZ) to their local LANs. We will let you know when the Tommy gets the concept shots up and the site is ready for you to buy some Urban Terror swag.

Urban Terror: Punked!
Been a very busy week in the community, due to the availability of the new Quake 3, 1.32 Point Release from id Software. As with many point releases, there are always issues that arise within the community. This time was no exception, as most of the questions dealt with configuration and settings for the newly included PunkBuster.

Hopefully we can provide some basic information on what you need to do, in order to get it up and running with Urban Terror. When installing the new point release, be sure to answer 'yes' when it asks if you want to install the PunkBuster files. Once installed, you will have to enable PunkBuster from the console by typing, PB_CL_ENABLE, CL_PUNKBUSTER 1 or go into the 'Multiplayer' screen in Quake 3 and toggle it to 'ENABLED.'

You will need a legit copy of Quake 3 Arena, as the validation server is on and will require a valid CD key in order to play online. Much of the talk has centered around gamers continually being kicked from servers, for incorrect CD keys, out of range variables and cheats. You will also experience lag at the servers you play on for about 20 minutesor so when you first install 1.32, but that clears up - fast machines won't notice it. All updating for PunkBuster is done from inside the game. You will not have to download updates, the PB client will do it automatically. For more information, you can check out PunkBuster's player's guide to answer some of the questions and give you information an how the software works in conjunction with Quake 3 and Urban Terror.

Most of the power of PunkBuster is on the server side, as those who continue to get kicked can tell. Silicon Ice Development is working on default PunkBuster config that will be included in the distribution of 2.6. Tapper, of the OGL has created a PB server config that will be used as the base default config. Dracostian, from the QA Team has also provided a PB config, based around Tapper's config. PunkBuster variables and ranges are set at the discretion of the server admin, we are only trying to provide a default config that will give admins a starting point from which to work.

News on PR 1.32
Semi-reliable rumors state that the new Point Release 1.32 (including PB support) should be available within a week or so. That should put an end to the wallhacks and aimbots that's been poisoning the community for quite some time now. The PR should be directly compatible with the current Beta 2.5 (PB has to be activated from the console though).

On a side note - SID claims that Beta 2.6 release date should be announced shortly, unless the QA Team finds any more bugs in the code. So let's keep our fingers crossed

Where is Beta 2.6?
Rumors and speculation continue to swirl around the Urban Terror Community about the whereabouts of Beta 2.6 from Silicon Ice Development. As we mentioned in our QuakeCon 2002 Diary, we did release client files for the gamers attending the event in the BYOC in order for some mass feedback. Due to some unfortunate events, the server files were leaked to the community. This accounts for unofficial 2.6 servers up and running. Silicon Ice Development does not promote or suggest you play this leak, as it is about a month old and many of the issues in that build have been resolved.

As for the current status of Urban Terror Beta 2.6, the development continues. We are not going to release a version that is buggy, which would cause us and the community problems (remember 2.4?). At this point in development, we cannot afford it and the community would probably not put up with it. Am I right? Density and TwentySeven continue to troubleshoot issues that the QA Team continues to identify. Some of these issues are things that the coders must attempt to reproduce. Sometimes that is easier said then done.

There are rumors and misconceptions that continue to move through out the community. We will try to dispel those rumors and point out what is fact.

Rumor: "SID is releasing 2.6 when the 1.32 point release comes out." False. We are developing on our schedule, not that of id Software, working on the point release.

Rumor: "SID knows when the point release is going to be released." False. The development, like the community is at the mercy of id Software. We do not know when the 1.32 PR is going to be released.

Rumor: "SID has the new point release." True. We are beta testing the new point release, as are some of the other popular mods that were developed for Quake 3.

Rumor: "SID has set a release date for 2.6." False. We have not set a date. The reason being, we are not ready to give the current build our approval for release. We will continue to say, "Beta 2.6 is ready, when we are done with it.

We are sure many in the community, especially league admins will have decisions to make about beginning their new seasons, or continuing to defer the start until 2.6 is released. As for the gamers hopefully you continue to support the mod and community, as we are doing everything we can, in order to finish the new build and release it. Once we feel we have a complete, bug free build, we will set a release date.
